HOW IT WORKS
Members
Members of 100+ Women Who Care Salt Spring Island attend three meetings per year for a maximum of one hour per meeting. They commit to donating $100 at each meeting ($300 for the year). Please note that members are required to make their donation even if they are unable to attend a meeting. A membership year runs from September to August.
Once a member, they can nominate a charity of their choice at least 4 weeks before the meeting.
Charities
Nominated charities will be qualified by the 100+ Women Who Care Salt Spring Island Planning Committee. For every member who nominates a charity, an equal number of nominations will be placed in the charity basket.
Each member may have only one nomination in the charity basket at any time; however, a given charity may receive more than one nomination.
At our meetings, three charities are randomly chosen from the basket.
A member’s nomination for a charity will remain in the basket until the charity is awarded funds; they are no longer a member of 100+ Women or until they remove the nomination for their charity.
See more at How To Nominate.
Presentations
Members who nominated the three charities will have the opportunity to give a 5-minute presentation about why they think their nominated charity should received the compiled group funds. However, there are options for member who wish to nominate a charity, but who do not wish to make a presentation. Please don’t let the ‘presentation’ deter you from making a nomination – see below for more information!
In their presentation, members may highlight specific programs run by a charity; however, the nomination is for the organization rather than a program. Please read our Presentation Tips before making a presentation for your nominated charity.
If you would like to nominate a charity, but you don’t want to make a presentation, that’s OK! Another member may have nominated the same charity and is prepared to make a presentation. If not, a member of our Planning Committee will always be willing to do this. Just let us know and we will figure it out!
VOTING
Please be sure to attend our meetings in person, as only those physically present are able to vote on which local charity will receives our funds! After the three presentations at one of our meetings, each member in attendance will cast a secret ballot for her choice of the three charities presented. There is no proxy voting. If you’re unable to attend a meeting, no other member or person may cast a secret ballot for you.
The charity receiving the most votes from the members in attendance will be awarded the members’ funds. If two charities are tied for most votes, the third charity will be omitted from the secret ballot and members will re-vote.
Funds
The selected charity receives $100 from 100 members (or however members there are), totalling $10,000 (or more). The awarded charity sends out individual tax receipts to each member and must commit to spending the funds for the betterment of the Salt Spring Island community.
The selected charity will present at the following meeting to tell us how they used the awarded funds (or their plans for using the funds). Awarded charities can use funds in the ways that best help them meet their mission.
Members may make their $100 donation in one of several ways – at each meeting, donations can be made by cash or cheque. Members may also donate by e-transfer or by dropping a cheque off at the West of the Moon toy store in Ganges.
