HOW TO NOMINATE

Any member in good standing* may nominate a local registered charity. Nomination forms must be submitted no later than 4 weeks prior to the meeting. If a form is submitted after that date, it will be held for the next meeting.

All individual nominations remain in the basket until:

  • that charity is awarded the funds,
  • the nominator is no longer a member in good standing* or
  • the nominator withdraws their nomination, or the nominated charity indicates it does not wish to participate.

(there is no need to re-nominate your charity after each meeting; their name will remain in the basket until one of the above occurs)

IMPORTANT: Each member may have only one nomination in the charity basket at any time.

A member can withdraw their nomination and replace it with another at any time by contacting us. If you make a second nomination and do not contact us, we will use your most recent nomination and delete the previous one.

A charity can receive more than one nomination if multiple members nominate the same charity.

*a member in good standing is one who has, since joining, stayed up to date with their donation commitments of $100 per meeting for the current or most recent season. If a member joins between meetings, they do not have any donation commitments until the next meeting.

QUALIFIED CHARITIES

All the charities that are added to the charity basket MUST meet the following criteria:

  • Commit to spending a substantial portion of funds awarded by our members for the benefit of the Salt Spring Island community
  • Be a registered Canadian charity*
  • Not be a registered charity whose primary function is fundraising or grant-making, including foundations
  • Able to provide individual tax receipts to our members
  • Agree not to solicit our members directly for further contributions
  • Agree not to create, sell or distribute a list with our members’ contact information
  • After funds have been awarded, provide a spokesperson to present to our members at our next meeting
  • Must not have received funds from 100 Women Who Care Salt Spring Island in the past 3 years (Please note that if a charity has recently received funds from another funder such as the Salt Spring Island Foundation or 100 Men Who Care Salt Spring Island, they are still eligible to be nominated here!)
  • Before you start your nomination – please see our Policy 2 – Nominee Eligibility for more details about the types of charities you can nominate.

TO NOMINATE A CHARITY

  1. Ensure your charity meets the requirements of a qualified charity. All those on our current list are qualified charities.
  2. Ensure you are a member ‘in good standing’ (This means that since joining, you have stayed up to date with your donation commitments of $100 per meeting for the current or most recent season. If you join between meetings, you do not have any donation commitments until the next meeting).
  3. Fill out a Charity Nomination Form at least 4 weeks before the next members’ meeting.
  4. Create a 5-minute presentation that you or another member* of 100+ Women Who Care Salt Spring Island will give if your charity is one of the three charities selected from the charity basket at an upcoming meeting.  Hesitant to speak?  We understand! Contact us.  We can likely connect you with other members who may have nominated the same charity.  Usually, one of them is already prepared to speak, so you won’t need to!
  5. If you do not want to speak in public, or if you will be away and don’t have another one of our members to speak on your behalf, contact our Steering Committee.  If you provide us with a copy of your presentation, we can make it on your behalf. Please note that we will choose a Steering Committee member who does not have a personal or family association with the charity they are presenting for.
  6. Our Steering Committee will determine if your charity meets our eligibility criteria. Someone will contact you within a few days if there is a problem with the charity’s eligibility.

*Presentations must be made by a current member in good standing. For more information on presentingSee our presentation tips
